Cost of Reseller Hosting

Posted by greyman, 06-16-2008, 05:20 PM
I've read some posts discussing whether a higher priced reseller service is better than a lower priced one. Well I doubt there is really an answer to that question outside of trying high and low priced ones, with identical services, and making your own decision. But is it fair to say that location of the reseller can impact the price without any value added? For example, the cost of doing business in Los Angeles or New York City may be higher than the cost of doing business Alabama. Someone has to absorb that cost and I bet you can guess who it is. All things equal, location may indeed affect the price without additional value. No, this doesn't mean that you should sign up a hosting provider in Bahgdad.

This is a good point - but those providers in LA or NY must offer EXACTLY the same in order to evaluate this price difference. And as I know NONE business operates EXACTLY as another.

Location has many values... for example... if I live in Los Angeles I would not want to host my game server in Chicago. I would want to host it in Los Angeles so I can benefit from lower ping times and smaller routes. The same should also apply to many other applications.

Higher quality usually entails higher prices. One of the more direct implications of a higher price is the host's ability to put fewer accounts per server, which will, on average, improve the performance and uptime of servers. That's not to say that an expensive host is necessarily better. Their prices can vary, as you noted, and some may simply have a higher markup.
