Outlook etc not sending - webmail will?
Posted by AbsoluteWebHost, 05-15-2007, 03:57 PM |
Hey there everyone,
I am a bit puzzled at the moment.
I have run a server for some time with no troubles. All of a sudden the server will not allow outlook, outlook express, eudora etc to send emails. I can connect and receieve emails fine, but sending is another matter. I get a connection timed out message when I attempt to connect and send emails.
Sending email via Horde Webmail works 100% fine, it only seems to be when you send from a client side email app.
Any ideas on what might be causing this, or where to start looking? My experience with Linux is very, very limited.

Hello,
It seems like your ISP has blocked the port 25 for sending mails. Its now a common practise of ISP to block port 25, to prevent spamming. If you have any additional ports opened for sending mails (usually 26), use that port for configuring the SMTP port in outlook express.
You can check whether the port 25 is blocked or not by running this command from your windows commant prompt.
>telnet SERVER_IP 25
If its not connecting means, its blocked somewhere in between your local machine and your server.(Try stopping your local machine firewall as well).

Hi there,
This may be the issue. Are you able to tell me if you can connect to mail.webhosting.net.nz? If you can then I would say you are right. If not, I will have to look into other issues.

I have just tried connecting from 2x different ISPs andcan confirm I am still getting a timed out message - that means its not an ISP blocking issue. I will try shutting down this windows firewall and see if that helps.

I have tried turning windows firewall off, with no joy. It appears it is a configuration issue on the server perhaps? I have also noticed I cannot connect to SSH.

Hello,
Perhaps the mail clients need authentication enabled?
Hope this helps and best wishes.

Hi there all,
Interesting that you can connect SparkSupport - I will try from a local internet cafe and see how that goes.
AllenB: Authentication is enabled and has been since before the rpboelsm, and settings weren't changed so I have eliminated this is a cause for the problem.

This can occur if the mail server has got callout verification enabled. You may ask your host to white list your ISP IP.

Problem has been solved, it appears although my ISP has decided to block port 25 - along with a few of my customers. I have opened port 26 to work around this.

If your ISP is blocking access to remote SMTP servers, then you should still be able to use your ISP's outgoing mail server to send out mail.
You can still send out e-mail from your domain even if you use your ISP's SMTP server. I think there may be some misconception around that. A lot of people seem to think that in order to send out e-mail from an @myhosteddomain.com you have to use mail.myhosteddomain.com. This is just not true.

Using the ISP's mailserver is often proposed as the solution to this and it works well for a fixed desktop. But for a laptop it's a PITA when you use multiple ISPs (home dsl, work dsl, hotel dial-up, 3G mobile etc). I find the simplest solution is just to use SSL - I've never heard of port 465 being blocked.
