Configuring VPS for backup storage

Posted by Promex, 08-09-2015, 06:59 AM
Hello, I'm getting a few VPS solely for backup purpose only. They will be used to store automatic daily backup by cPanel, hence I believe I need SFTP as well as SSH. Are there any easy and secure methods to setup the VPS without the overhead of installing unnecessary stuff such as MySQL, Apache, Mail etc? How do I ensure the VPS is secure for storage? (besides closing all unused ports and excluding services which are not needed). It would be good if there's a comprehensive guide out available for me to follow through. Regards

What I do is get a vps with lots of SSD storage, 1gbit port, and add users (adduser vps-$node_id-$ctid) then create a new SFTP target in WHM >> Backup Configuration, install the generated public key (.pub) to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on the backup server, validate the destination in WHM, and enable backups for all users, and let it go. You'd save a bit of $$ by doing this on a private vlan or network. Regarding the OS and unneeded apps, Debian/Ubuntu is pretty easy to lock down and control with ufw if needed.

Hi, If you are getting VPS only for creating a backup storage, then only FTP and SSH is what you will be needing on it. There is no need for any other applications like MySQL or Apache on it. Keep it simple, just install applications that are needed. I think default installation of Debian comes with Apache installed on it. Make sure you close those applications properly because they are not needed. OS will not matter on the VPS as long as the VPS provider guarantees the VPS is reliable. Having a connectivity to the backup storage through internal network has a very plus benefit in data transfer speed and reliability.
