Newbie question about VPS service
Posted by llista, 09-29-2007, 09:04 AM |
I am looking at a VPS (A) sign up webpage and they ask me for:
ReverseDNS / PTR:
Another VPS (B) sign up webpage asks me for:
Server Hostname:
These two VPS are selling unmaged VPS, my question is, do I usually need to have a domain name in order to rent a VPS?
I never had a VPS before so I thought they would give me their own URI/IP and would log in there in port 22 via ssh.
If I need my own domain name to rent a VPS, then why is the first service asking me for the ReverseDNS? I do have a domain name if necessary but it is not hosted anywhere therefore I have no IP pointing to it. I do not want to use the VPS for webhost just for something else.
Thank you

Most hosts ask for the hostname as they can set up the server with the details you provided. Since you are going for a server you should need a hostname and details such as reverse dns.

Ok, I understand now I need a domain name in order to have a VPS, but I always thought a reverseDNS it is the IP pointing to the domain name, so if my domain name is not hosted anywhere, how can they ask for that?
Supposedly if I give them a domain name then the IP will be the same as the VPS account they give me.

Reverse dns means the reverse look up of your IP address in the server. When your server it setup, and your you have registered a domain elsewhere and has a zone file, you will need to add the hostname entry for the new server in that zone file as follows.
In domain.com zone file add a subdomain as
host IN A IP_of_the_new_server
So the host.domain.com will have a IP that will be in the new server. Now this IP should have a reverse dns. It can be set as host.domain.com itself.
