It depends on your needs really, cloud hosting is a lot better for application hosting as well as app development because it can sustain different environments. Scalability as well is a big difference, the cloud is great for expansion if you predict more traffic one week for example. Depending on what hosting you want, costs will vary. e.g a fully managed dedicated server will cost you loads more than standard web hosting. Its hard to say, theres so many differences between all types of hosting! Are you thinking about any specific types?

Peter, The obvious answer for this is the majority of "cloud hosts" are currently exactly the same as regular hosts apart from the fact that they run on cloud hardware rather than dedicated hardware. If you'd like to give us a specific example of products you have been looking at we can give you more of an idea of what the differences will be.

Thanks, I just joined this site and never heard of cloud hosting so I wanted to basically get the difference, do you know any sites I can look at for cloud hosting? thank you, what is cloud hardware though? never heard of it.

Peter, Cloud hardware is a way of saying that the server will be running on a set of resources that have been pooled together to form a cloud. It should provide redundancy so that if there is a hardware error this is covered by the resources, that are free, within the cloud. This is normally done by a hypervisor which monitors all the nodes within the cloud and it will swap out any bad hardware so that is no longer used.

cloud hosting gives you an expanding vps container that adds and subtracts resources as need and bills you likewise

Peter, Not a problem. It may be best for you to get comfortable with your new VPS while at the same time researching cloud technology and then go from there
