Limited diskspace on reseller

Posted by sledge90, 04-14-2012, 05:48 AM
So if I have a 50gb reseller plan, does that mean that I can only create 2x25gb accounts or 5x10GB accounts, even though I've only used ONE megabyte of each account?? That way, it will be hard to offer large diskspace accounts to my clients! Will this be solved if I switch to VPS???

That would depend on if your host allows over selling.

This is a good thing, overselling too much or offering unlimited is always a bad idea. That said it depends on what host you are choosing and how/if they place account or overselling limitations, you would need to ask. Dont be afraid to start small, once you max out your current resources you can always upgrade. I do suggest perhaps research a bit more before getting into reselling. A VPS still has hard limits, higher cost, cPanel license, you *can* over sell it since you would have root but I would recommend not doing so. Last edited by SPINIKR-RO; 04-14-2012 at 05:59 AM.

As others mentioned it will depend if your host allows overselling. If they do not then what you have said above is correct. If they do allow overselling, you can sell more than you are allocated as long as you do not use more space than what you have.

If your host enables over selling feature, Then can create more account than you are thinking. Sometime hosts enables over selling but limits the account creation amount. If they do that, then you can only creat that particular amounts of account.

Ask your web host specifically how resource limits are handled for your account. If resource limits are based on actual usage it is possible to allocate more resources than the total amount permitted for your account. If resource limits are based on allocation you will be limited to what you posted at the start. Overselling is a good thing for resellers, but don't abuse it. Always set pricing and create packages with an eye on the future. Ask yourself, can I earn enough with these costs/packages to comfortably move to a dedicated server when required?

I don't think your question about a VPS has been answered. The answer is yes, you would be able to oversell if you had a VPS. However, you may want to start with a reseller plan. Even if your host does not allow overselling you can always upgrade after you have allocated all your disk space and bandwidth.

You need a reseller accounts with overselling enabled so you can create custom packages.

Completely agree with that As above, find out exactly what the resource limits are, as they vary between provider (CPU, nodes, emails per hour, etc) If you are unable to oversell, then this can cause issues if you only sell large amounts of disk space, but your customers don't use all the resources For example Customer purchases 5GB account but only uses 250MB Therefore don't restrict your marketing to such large accounts Over the years I have made smaller and smaller accounts, as the majority of customers don't actually upload that much content It's a fine balance and it depends on if you prefer a small number of customers paying large amounts, or large number of customers paying small amounts If you lose 10 customers, how will this affect your busines...

Thank you all for answering. I purchased the 50gb reseller plan Hostgator after reading a lot of good reviews about them, but I wasn't aware of the "overselling" term and what it meant. It seems that without overselling, my profit will be VERY limited compared to what I can make. So, I don't know if it will be necessary to create another topic, but here it goes: What is the best/most-recommended hosting company that offers reseller plans with overselling enabled? btw, I know a lot of people on this board make offers for reselling, but I need a company that I know that won't go out of business in the next months, so I need something reliable. Another question: If I purchase the VPS or Dedicated, I won't have to bother asking the company about overselling right? They do allow it by default?

Correct. You'd only be limited by the size of the harddrive. You can usually add more harddrives to the server. You'd have to check that with the host.

Yes, but remember that with the additional power and control that comes with having a VPS/Dedicated also comes responsibility. Remember that unless you know much about server management, go with a managed provider.

Posted by sledge90, 04-14-2012, 05:44 PM
And what responsability is that? My only intention is using it for CPANEL with overselling enabled. What additional work am I gonna have to do?

Unless your paying someone to manage the server or VPS for you you'll need to install all the software and services, secure and harden the server and perform any updates that are need for performance or security reasons etc.

ok, first of all, for starting a hosting company, reseller accounts are good and cost effective. (someone mentioned hostgator)With hostgator, they give alot of resources, tutorials and they provide 24/7 chat for their resellers. So its a good place to start. Hostgator doesnt allow overselling, (because they themselves oversell at an unbelievable level.) I never had problems with hostgator, but moving to a vps, and all the sites (especially wordpress/phpbb )are faster. If your a small 1 man host and your on a budget, Best thing you can do is start with a reseller, (you can then get started with less money spent) offer realistic plans to people (5gb hdd) once you get 10 clients, you can then justify moving to a VPS. Just my 2cents. Last edited by Mad_matt; 04-15-2012 at 12:51 AM.

Considering that the company provides me with Cpanel already installed on the vps account, what else is required? Doesn't Cpanel come by default with all the additional stuff such as billing system, site editor, phpMyAdmin, anti-spam, email system and all that stuff that is included in the reseller account?

I was responding to your question to the quote(s) above.
