Problem with E6700, 2gb of ram server

Posted by feverinlove, 01-29-2008, 10:50 AM
First of all, I would like to say hi to all wht members. My websites are currently hosted on a server with below options: E6700 CPU 2gb of ram 250GB SATA WHM/Cpanel unmanaged $170/month The problem is that I actually host 4 PHP/mysql sites on the server. The total unique hits on the websites would add up to somewhere around 15k-20k unique hits per day. The server crashes or freezes every day! I tried my best to optimize the websites and php/mysql settings, but I got no result. 2 out of 4 websites are recently bought and they were hosted on servers weaker than what I have now. The current hosting company keep telling me that there is something with the sites coding, but I find it hard to believe since they were working fine before I transferred them to my server. I cant figure out the problem. The current deal ends on 14/02/2008, so I am planning to get new servers. Please point the way for me if I should change my hosting company or something else. Thanks in advance.

You might need to seperate the MYSQL and Web Server to two servers, or move from Apache to LightHttp or similar faster software. You might also look into getting more ram, maybe another 2-4GB

I use litespeed and though my site doesn't receive near that many hits the load is significantly lower when users browse it. Also try xcache or eaccelerator to help with the php If you are intent on switching providers try limestonenetworks they have been really good to me.

Thanks alot for yout replies. Some of my friends also told me to increase the RAM size. I am already using eaccelerator on the server.

RAM should help out with it. What is your load like? You might also switch out Apache for LightHttpd or similar webserver software as I said, and have your my.cfg(MYSQL) optimized by someone.

Definately put in as much ram as possible. If you are going to be changing servers then seriously look at either raid or scsi drives as this could also be a bottleneck. It is unusual for a server to crash every day. In effect if there is too much traffic it will just go very very slow and seem unavailable but shouldnt freeze altogether. I would point my finger towards some sort of hardware problem.

The load is usually around 3.5 I have asked my ds provider to increase the RAM by 1gb, which is appearantly $25/month. I would like to get my server's php.ini, my.cnf and other settings optimized. Is there any company or individual that you guys can point me to?

Do you have lm_sensors installed? What temperatures are you running at? The load although high shouldnt cause the whole thing to freeze. However a sustained high load could be causing possible heat problems relating back to what i said previously that it could be a hardware issue.....

email Steve at Rack911, his costs might be a little steep, but he is one of the best at dealing with this type of stuff and is well recommended. I believe sales@rack911.com is who you should email but I have seen him well recommended around here 10+ times

You probally just need a server tweak hired a linux admin company to tweak your services in your server. As that cpu is fast.

Thanks for all the info guys. I emailed Steve.

Sounds like a bad misconfiguration, or hardware related issue. Linux should not "freeze" or "crash". A competent technician should be able to pinpoint the issue.

Yeah sounds like there is something wrong that box should be more than enough for that kinda traffic, could be os, hardware or cpanel related.

Well, I got the server unmanaged, so I don't know how I can get them to find if the problem is server-hardware related.

Hi, I am currently dealing with this problem, his server don't crash or freeze, only load goes to 100-200, actually you can ping server but you can not connect via ssh or WHM. We have to reset server.

Thanks resellertr for clearing the issue. I just got an email from layeredtech that they cannot upgrade the ram.

Must be some very badly written code then or just sheer amount of traffic through the port to give the same effect as a ddos attack (but obviously not because its legit traffic) Upgrades time me thinks.

I don'T believe the code is the problem since those sites were hosted on much lower powered servers with no problem.
