Backing Up A 750GB Harddisk

Posted by Kristy, 07-15-2008, 02:20 AM
I have a dedicated server with a hdd capacity of 750Gb.. currently, only about 100GB is being used.. what kind of backup would you recommend? - Rsync to another server (like BQBackup.com) - Rsync to another harddrive within the same server - Cpanel archived backups onto another server/hdd - Something else? Thanks, Kristy

Hi, Best is use Cpanel backup on another drive plus Rsync to another server. More Backups are better than one. Regards, Bobby

How much bandwidth can you spare for transferring of backups? If thats an issue, backup to a 2nd Hard Drive and then backup "less" frequently to an offsite/server location.

I don't use Cpanel, but I have seen references in other threads which indicate Cpanel Backup is not a good option for large amounts of data. Regardless of this, rsync to another server is probably the best option. Incremental backups shouldn't use much bandwidth, unless you frequently change alot of the content. Also, it wouldn't hurt to backup to a local hard disk as well.

Just to state the obvious, everything else equal, an offsite backup is better. Backing up to another hard drive in the same server still leaves you vulnerable to fire and other such issues. Things I would think about, though, are bandwidth prices, transfer time (even on a fast connection, 100 GB will take some time), and possibly even server load during transfer.
