RESELLING, reseller companies and reseller types, what should i choose?
Posted by BeCoMe1, 12-26-2001, 11:07 AM |
I have looked at many of your postings and I have also looked at many reselling reviews on hosting directories.
My research has resulted in several hosting reseller companies and reselling types and I would like to know:
1 - Generally which reseller company is the best one?
and...
2 - Generally which type of reselling is the best one? Or which one is best for what kind of a purpose?
There are 2 main types of reselling:
(A) A reseller plan with a defined amount of space, traffic and fee and you define your ownplans to resell (like www.mchost.com).
(B) Reselling defined plans (like www.venturesonline.com).
In my research I have found these companies:
Type (A) www.mchost.com, www.splashhost.com and www.ecommercediscovery.com
Type (B) www.venturesonline.com, www.diatone.net, www.www-www.hosting.net and www.ewsnl.com.
I am interested in your experiences with these reseller types and companies. Which company and type do you recommend and why?
Thanks.
Also: I would be glad if you could provide me more nice resellering offers/types/company names.

If I understand your classifications correctly....
The A group:
PRO:
- gives your more flexability
- likely have your own nameservers and be transparent
CONS:
- more work and responsibility for you
- more upfront investment
The B group:
PRO:
- the reseller host takes care of the tech things.. you are just responsible for the payments
- less investment
CONS:
- you can only sell what they offer
- less profit
Hope this helps...
Another reseller host that does both and I can recommend is: http://www.hostroute.com/

addaction, you have some nice points but both group A and B are provide you with your own nameservers for transparency, thanks for the reply.

Schumi3, downtown.com are more expensive than the companies I have provided.
That type of reselling (B) give less profit (according to "addaction") so costs should be very low for group B reselling...
Any resellers out there who can tell us about their experiences with the reseller companies I have provided you on the top?

Does group A resellers handle all the tech support? As far as I know group B resellers does not...

In general, you are responsible for supporting your clients (applies to both groups), unless otherwise stated.

I suggest that you add hostmatters.com to your list for type B reselling. HostMatters.com give you full support to your business. As I know Annette do provide you with "Superior service. Sensible price.". That's my conclusion of 5-years hosting experiences. For me, I use type A for my own sites and most little sites of customers, and type B for general customers who need more bandwidth and space.

Choosing between the two is kind of hard but I see it this way:
With type A there is more "opportunity" to make more money since probably 95% of clients probably use under 500 megs. But, for example, you offer a package with 6 gigs and get 2 clients that both use 6 gigs. That's 12 gigs of space, and most type A reseller plans start at this amount. That could kinda hurt you.
With type B your income is guaranteed (unless you give 30 day guarantee, chargebacks ect.). Even if Joe Blow user signs up and uses 15 gigs a month, the type B company pays for the bandwidth, not you.
So it's pretty much deciding what fits you the best. Do you have the startup capital to afford a type A reseller package? Or do you want to go for the less risky and *possibly* less profit with type B company.
We can't answer for you, but personally I'd prefer type B. Plus I do like VenturesOnline (although they don't allow you to point domains to sub-domains which is REALLY annoying).
That's my $0.02

I have been a Plan A reseller pack with Alan of Splashhost for the last 2 months and I have had absolutely no problems at all...
I prefer plan A because it gives you the freedom to make your plans and make deals where you think the customer can bring business
I have sold 50mb plans for 60$/year paid in full, 30$/year paid upfront for 3 pop3 emails and have also given away 20mb plans free! All in all, my customers are utilsing only 3-5% of allocated space and less than 5% of allocated bandwidth.
So while there is room to oversell, I am not going to do that and with the recurring revenue and some sharing I am moving to a dedicated server soon [but I will still keep my reseller space as a fallback until I am really comfortable with the server - maybe 3-4 months more - you can never afford to let down a customer]
For managing the risks in Plan A, [a] dont oversell - so there is no risk really [b] judge your customers and accept sign up - business sites are very good as customers
Just the fool's opinion though - take it for what it is
Cheers

Wow... I'm really impressed by your professional attitude, can't say I'm going to be jumping for joy to sign up with your company.
Besides being unprofessional that comment was totally off-topic...
Back to the point...
It's hard to say the "best" however it is up there, though Ventures Online (http://www.venturesonline.com) is also high up there.

Comphosting, some hosts (despite multiple warnings), seem unable to comprehend that we do not allow board-spam on the main forums and that all advertising must be limited to the advertising forums. Regrettably, Webdude has repeatedly violated the forum guidelines here and JinkinsBeans was a planted post, submitted after another post was removed. Please continue on with the thread... sorry.
