help with htaccess

Posted by hotpockets, 10-03-2008, 03:14 PM
My site is intermittently requiring users to log in before the default.asp page is displayed. Why it started doing this no one seems to know. We cannot find an htaccess file in the directory. I'm very frustrated! It is a Windows server hosted by Hostexcellence. Thanks for any advice...

Since it is a windows server, is it shared or dedicated server? There is a service call IIS, I think there is something to do with the user's permission and user under the IIS. When you are inside the IIS, look for your site and right click on it, to show its properties. You can then browse the tab to look for the user, for example domain.com, the user should be IUSR_Domain and the password in the FTP and user is the same.

From IIS you should allow "Anonymous Users" to access it. If you have copy/paste website files from another location, they might not have the required permissions. Read from IUSRS.

Thanks, Steve and Krisanta! I'll try those suggestions... How do I access IIS? I have FrontPage extentions activated, but now I can't log in via FrontPage either.

Now that you mentioned FrontPage, I do know that in FrontPage you can modify the settings so that authentication is required just to view your site. Any administrative level FrontPage user will be able to do this. Which brings to mind the possibility that if you have not so secure logins to FrontPage, someone might have guessed it and made some changes. There are so many different things that could lead to this, I am just guessing, but I do know that I have helped a customer who ended up doing this to his site, and he didn't know it. The fact that you can not login via FrontPage may actually point to other problems though.
