UK Reseller accounts
Posted by c0052372, 03-04-2003, 06:51 PM |
This past month our web host has caused us nothing but problems. They upgraded their servers and made a complete arse of it and have cost my company a small fortune in time and has put us very close to losing clients.
Obviously we are now looking to replace them.
Can anyone recomend a solid, reliable UK web host with standard call rate support (24/7) and support staff who actually know what they're doing. They must have a clear pricing structure and it must be readily available. We do not mind paying well if we get the service we need.
Our current package can be viewed at http://www.webfusion.co.uk/reseller-info.shtml
Our main technical requirement is PHP/MySQL. We would be transferring all domains to the new reseller and would also require domain maping to be available.
Any recomendations are more than welcome as long as they meet the above criteria.
Thanks in advance,
Andrew Banks

Looking at the bottom of the link to web fusion it says:
"Additional 1 MB of bandwidth for one virtual server 5p"
Unless my head isn't doing maths correctly at this hour that works out to about £50/Gb for transfer!! This must be _the_ most expensive bandwidth charge on the planet?

UK Bandwidth is expensive, but that is just rediculous!

Seems somewhat excessive to me, although its not necessary to use servers that are actually located in the UK. For most practical purposes, servers located in the US or Canada where bandwidth is cheaper will do you nicely. There are a number of UK based hosts (in terms of support and admin) who could offer you a solution on a less expensive US based server.
Things to point out with webfusion:
"Unlimited Fast Web Space"
That is a lie, unlimited webspace simply cannot exist so they are being deceptive from the start.
Also, 10GB transfer is 'probably' not going to be enough for most purposes, especially if you have any real plans to expand but at their costs for additional bandwidth I think that could be quite hard to achieve.

I do disagree somewhat about there not being much difference between UK and US located servers.
I've found that US servers give a ping time of about 120ms while a good UK server will return about 20ms. While ping times don't say a great deal about the quality or speed of a service 100ms of latency is certainly noticeable.

Well yes, but, unless the sites are used primarily for file downloading or for some other reason need fast UK to UK connection I don't think paying the extra is worthwhile. By going with a US based service, you generally get more for your money which is often a principle factor when you're looking to get into reselling. For most hosting purposes, being on a US located server won't be so noticable for the average user. If it were a problem, then people simply wouldn't do it.
You can still get a UK service, using US servers, and have a very pleasant hosting experience IMHO.

Try dropping Craig at Flump.net a line... I seem to remember he was talking about getting some servers up and running at a UK datacenter but I'm not sure if it was dedicated only or reseller type systems...
