My experience with SRLhosting

Posted by PCplayground, 07-06-2003, 12:32 AM
I have two reseller accounts on http://www.srlhosting.com and have been with them for 3 months. Uptime: They have what I would conside to be good uptime, 99% ( http://www.srlhosting.com/status ). And when there is downtime you can usually see it posted on their forum why, or atleast that they are investigating it. They also post on the forums about scheduled downtime. Server: They seem to do very well in balancing their servers. They told me my site was using a lot of memory, so they added more memory to their server, which I never thought I host would do. I do not believe they oversell much, if at all. Support: Their response times are very fast, usually within less than an hour. They usually seem to be helpful with the responses too. Their hard drive switch: This totally killed my outlook on them. They decided to change hard drives (swap them). This was supposed to take around 5 hours, instead it took around 30 hours. So my site was down the entire July 4th. Although, they are supposed to give people next months hosting for free as a sort of refund. When the server did come online my site did not work. The reason they gave was that it was a scripting issue and that I had caused it to not work. They thought it might have been a software issue (they upgraded to redhat 8). I changed my config from what they had changed it to (when they tried to fix it) and it worked... still not sure why. I then was getting about 10 complaints of broken sites. I was able to see that the reason their scripts were not working was because some folders were missing. I uploaded these folders, site worked fine. Clients said they didn't delete the folders (which I believe, they couldnt have while the server was down). I am now receiving complaints about folders missing. The biggest one being a dating site that I host and has about 2,000 members that have uploaded their picture. The folder that was deleted is where all these pictures are stored. They then pretty much put the blame on me saying I am responsible for backups, which I understand I should have done. However, they have been a pretty good support with working on me with this. They pretty much told me they couldn't do anything, then somehow got the files back for the dating site. Ending Statement: I was really pleased with SRLhosting for 3 months. Then they did this hard drive swap and now I have lost about a few clients. I was very, very very very very very frustrated by this hard drive swap. I know I should have backed up all the sites, but I do believe they have some responsibility. They are a good high quality company. I would suggest them to anyone looking for a reseller server. I too am a reseller of SRL Hosting. While I was frustrated with the downtime they had yesterday, I knew there was nothing they could do about it. The drive had many errors in it and it needed to be replaced. Unfortunately, the datacenter ran into some problems, and the whole process got messed up. Rob from SRL kept all of us up to date with what was happening. I couldn't complain with what they did, just some bad luck. Other than that problem, SRL Rocks. I'm upgrading my account with them probably tomorrow. And during the little downtime problem, I got plenty of emails about it. However, I told my customers what was going on and referred them to my forum for the most up to date news, and I was posting there, what Rob had said. In the end, no clients were lost, and they were back singing praises about the commendable job I did keeping them up to date with what was going on, but really the credit goes to Rob.

Okay, I think I should clarify something. SRL is a very good company. As you can see, I put pretty much just good things in the categories. They can not be held completely responsible for the hard drive swap. I was just venting some of my frustrations. Please stop trying to sell me reseller hosting! I plan on staying with SRL. So please stop sending me PMs & Emails about your hosting company. Mods, is that even allowed?

Report 'em and get them banned.
