Should I Get a Reseller Account?

Posted by Amphian, 07-04-2003, 04:20 PM
I run a couple of small websites for people I know. I'm considering getting a hosting account that would let me move all of the sites to one place and run them from one account. That doesn't make me a reseller, but that's a direction I could see going in the long run. I can't afford the expense of most places that cater to resellers, and I still need a touch more in the way of support than most of them offer (online help and user forums for example), however, I'm finding it hard to find a decent host that has the flexibility to do what I want without my being a reseller. My needs are fairly small so far (200 MB space, 5 GB bandwidth, a few POPs and MySQL databases, CGI, SSH, PHP, etc.) as is my budget ($15 per month), but the lack of additional domains has been the problem on non-reseller accounts. Reliability is important to me, so it's less a matter of finding a rock-bottom price than of getting a reasonable price for what I need. Should I be trying to find a non-reseller account or looking at reseller accounts? What are the pros and cons of becoming a reseller? Any advice on hosts? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a reseller account [even though you won't "resell"] would suit you just fine. You can setup your friend's domains from your reseller panel and they will also have a control panel too. For your budget of 15/mth, I would suggest you taking a look at Dathorn.com. They're cheap, and things seem to hum along quite nicely. They should be able to help out out.

I would suggest you to buy a small reseller hosting account and host all your sites in one place. As Aussie Bob suggested..there are good reviews about Dathorn.com else you can look at dixiesys.com as well..they might be able to help you with their $ 10 plan.

Yes, I think you should get a reseller accounts, bcs when you sign up for a reseller account costs goes down by 10 to 100 times. Regards, Randy. <>Signatures need to be set up in your profile. Last edited by SoftWareRevue; 07-05-2003 at 03:19 PM.

I am not a reseller either, but a web developer/designer... I have a reseller account to host my clients. Its the logical choice. For a monthly fee I can host them all in one place, and easily set up or dismantle domains and sites. I do resell some of the space to friends and aquaintences, but it is not something I advertise. (even renting space to friends can become more of a headache than its worth) 15$/Month is a bit of a tight budget and unfortunately eliminates some of the popular host providers. However as mentioned above there are several good ones with packages in your price range. OKIhost is another that I believe has a package in that range and far as I've seen around here their clients seem happy. Good luck.

Thanks, everyone. I'm going to talk to some friends to decide if I want to go with just finding space for the accounts I have or actually getting into reselling and trying to find enough clients to make this a separate business - which means I should go back and read a bunch of stuff on these forums to see just what I might be getting myself into.

I think the "multi-hosting" packages might suit your needs even better than reseller account. Most reseller accounts costs have included IPs for branded nameservers, anonymous server, etc. If you only planning to host some of your own websites, as well as your friends' domain names, branded or not doesn't really matter. However, if you planning to use the rest of the reseller package to resell them in return of cash to cover up your expenses, then reseller account sounds good.

in this case reseller account is better... be with reseller you get the whole control.. multi-domain site point the add on domain to your-sub-domain/directory without additional CP....average,the host allow add on domain 3-5 basicly.. the more add on the more you pay 3.5-5/month/ea..so could take this into consideration...
