Reseller Needed | Capable of hosting large forums.

Hello everybody. To cut a long story short, I have recently been with a host on a reseller plan. However, I have now had my site disabled and have been told to host it elsewhere because hosted by me is a large forum - one that has 50 members (at any given time) each day posting between 500 and 1000 posts, as well as around 60+ spiders (at any given time). My previous host has told me that this forum strains their database too much and have basically given me no choice but to move. I was even barred access to my own files and after several angry emails and 24 hours later, I was finally reallowed access to my own files. Anyhow, I am not looking to repeat this same process. I am looking for a plan in the 8USD - 19USD / mo. bracket. Space is not a huge concern, as I only have a few sites hosted. Cpanel / WHM is needed as well as plenty of mysql DB's. I do not need unlimited, but certainly more than 150 as I plan to start a blog hosting service. What is key to my needs is that the server can support a large forum, with multiple database calls at any given time in the numbers of 100+ (spiders + members). Further, with the introduction of blog services, the strain on the mysql server should increase, but not by anything which shouldn't be handled. I must admit, I am less than pleased with my previous host. So, if you have any questions feel free. Otherwise, any recommendations << removed >> here are welcome. Thank you in advance. 50 members at any given time is just a medium size forum. You don't need more than 20 mysql connection at any given time with 50 members online. Most providers limit max mysql concurrent connection about 25-50.

My previous host only allowed 30, and the MySQL DB was causing major errors - forums were offline a lot. 50 members and 50 spiders. At any rate, I still need a reseller as I've been all but booted off the last one.

Perhaps if you can raise your budget a little bit, a VPS would be a good possibility

I would suggest that you need to realize that hosting that many connections would mean VPS...no decent host would allow that many on a shared as its disruptive to other clients on the server

I agree with the two previous posters, in this case a VPS would be a better solution for you, especialy since you say you are planning to start a blog service which would increase the amount of database usage and connections. It's better to stand safe for the future than to have to move everything again in the near future. Best of luck in your search! Last edited by writespeak; 06-15-2008 at 09:58 AM.

It seems that I may be moving in this direction after all. That many connections did disrupt the shared hosting environment on my old host, but I have little doubt that they oversold their servers inappropriately. To everybody else: Thank you for your input. I am currently reading what i can about sites that have been listed. Any other help / advice / offers are greatly appreciated. Thank you all for such outstandingly quick responses

I don't think your forum sounds that large but I could be wrong about that. Maybe what you should do is get application hosting for your forum then a reseller account for projects that are currently low traffic. That way you won't have your forum knocking everything else off line if it starts to become really resource intensive for the host.

I'm sorry, but I'm not quite sure what you mean by application hosting. The forum is not particularly large, no. With only around 2000 members, of around 50 online at any given time (the maximum being 100 simultaneously, or thereabouts), it doesn't even qualify as a "large" forum. I would be more inclined to call it small-medium sized. However, it was "large' enough to earn me a stern-without-any-other-chance deactivation of my site by my previous host, which IMO is not the way to do business explaining why I am moving rather than upgrading.

There are hosts around that provide a more friendly dynamic website systems. There are people like medialayer who do this but you pay a lot more for a lot less on their servers. Now I don't think your forum is large though I've seen much larger in shared environments running without issue. So your host is the problem most likely. I'm just suggesting an alternative which caters to dynamic websites.

I understand what you mean. I don't think that is the service for me at the moment. So it would be your opinion that my issues with my previous host will be limited to that host? Thanks for the help and advice you are giving - it is very much appreciated.

I believe so. But it can vary from host to host. Some will say 50 members online is a large forum others will say it's a drop in the bucket.

I see. Thank you again TonyB. That is most useful information.

And it can vary from package to package and it can most definitely vary with the amount one pays. I mean, if one pays $8 for the account, the host can be expected to put say 200ish accounts on that server, possibly more (again it all varies). If all users would have forums with 50 visitors online, the math gets to some really high numbers. It can go down to that (or something similar), but the host's leniency on usage matters can indeed vary a lot.
